I live in South Jersey (until I got a temp. transfer to a small town in PA) and I'll be back there this week! I agree to a certain extent that South Jersey is a piece of the South while still being in NJ. Its certainly not a bad place to live, and Philly is a much more accessible and down to earth place than NYC and the NYC burbs.

Unfortunately, where I live, anything that was once peaceful and nice down here gets completely obliterated when hordes of Staten Islanders, Long Islanders, and Bergen County residents with their AXE body spray and boomboxes overtake this area from May until October, which is exactly when I want to be out of the snow and enjoying myself.

Yes, I love Philly as the nearby city too. Much more accessible and easy going.

Are you referring to The Sitch and Snooki?

One place I am looking to move to has rents in the $300 range (with a roommate), that's only $3600 a year. So, moving without a job with $10k in your pocket is entirely feasible. Now with a family, I wouldn't move without a job. I wouldn't make my kids suffer for my dream.

Life is an adventure and you can't be scared to try things. You'd be surprised on how cheap you can live if necessary, and if you are tenacious enough and willing to struggle. To me, its actually freeing to live this way. When you have nothing, you have nothing to lose.
Planning is good though along with dreaming. There is a lot of fantasizing out there. Not having kids makes it easier.

Occasionally, we get a thread where they've dragged the kids across country, anyway & now they wonder where the jobs are. My stock line is "The economy is bad all over."
Southbound, the Colorado boards are interesting too. Oh my goodness.

Ann, I think that's a somewhat different mix.

NC is getting the whole eastern half of the country plus California & Oregon. SC gets a fair amount, but some get scared off & a lot, after they think about it, switch gears to NC. It's just a mess. Our governor is doing the best she can, but we've got a budget deficit too & are now facing across the board cuts.

The hordes of wannabees too. I don't want to denigrate anyone on this forum, but living near AC, you just are surrounded by the worst types of people imaginable. People so disconnected from nature, so disconnected from empathy or compassion for others, its not for me. Give me my limo and my casino chips, get me to the nightclub, and get the hell out of my way.

Add in the expense, the taxes, the home prices, the lack of open space, and the unemployment rate which is over 12% in Atlantic County, and there is no reason to stay.

The areas around RT 130/Rt 70/73 are way more congested than where I live.

I don't get the "just move SOUTH" (as in Jersey) when you work in North Jersey? Why would you willingly subject yourself to that commute?

really Frank? What's the people per square mile in Cinnaminson? I'll tell you - close to 2000 (and btw, I was there this past weekend!). I'm hovering around 450. Please stick to what you know, and it ain't North Jersey!

What I don't understand is when some people just pick a random state and decide they are going to move there, and then expend all of this energy thinking about it, but they don't even have a job there yet. Especially in this lousy economy.

It seems like escapist thinking or a fantasy to me.

The thought process seems to go like this: "If I could just move out of NJ, then all of my problems would vanish. The problem is NJ."
The proverbial Grass is always Greener. You cant run away from your problems

And vactioning somewhere is much different than actually living there.A lot of vacation areas are sort of remote( far from good jobs)

I live in Florida now and I hate when people move from NJ( or anywhere) and then complain that it isnt like what I left behind. I live in Jacksonville a larger city so there are jobs but much of Florida the only jobs are service to retirees or toursims. You can make a living very easily being a waitress. its really dumb to make a move w.o a job
