Currently I work in the Lawrenceville area but could be moving my job to either NYC or Philadelphia if something comes around. Because of this I would like to be central and fairly close to a train station:

Here is where the problems begin:

I am single and not married so I cannot afford a ridiculous property or taxes. On the other token, I really would not like to buy in a complete cesspool. I keep hearing that both New Brunswick and (gulp) Trenton, are on the up & up.

Any thoughts of areas I can look, is NB and Trenton actually improving?

If I need to provide more information let me know, thanks.

I would not put Trenton and New Brunswick in the same category. Apples to oranges.

New Brunswick would fit what you want, although the newer condo properties there are not inexpensive.

You can also look at neighboring towns as well depending on your budget...say Hamilton/Ewing or North Brunswick/Edison respectively.
