The school system is excellent. The train line runs through Hoboken and is a commuter line (which means (I believe) it only runs on weekdays, unless they've changed it since I've lived there). You can also take a bus from Route 46 to the Port Authority which probably takes about 45 minutes. You're close to good shopping, nice restaurants but you definitely need a car to get anywhere. (For example, the nearest grocery store is 2-3 miles in any direction by car). Some areas don't have sidewalks but there is a really nice town park with a HUGE playground for kids. I grew up there when there were still many farms; in some areas people still own horses but those areas are few and far between.
As mentioned before, the school system is excellent and many AP/honors courses offered at the high school level; (ie: they were offering a course in genetics which was very similar to what I took in college!).
X2 on the Montville comments. It's a great place.

I just read your March 8th post and am not sure if you are still interested. But, in case you still are, I may be able to shed a little light for you. To begin with, all the towns you mentioned are good towns to live and raise a family in. All of the towns you mentioned with the exception of Union Township have very high tax rates. Union has one of the lowest yet it is a very nice town. For what its worth, it recently ranked 75 in the top 100 towns in America to live. I must admit, I am somewhat favorable to Union as I have lived here since 1969. My house is less than a 5 minute walk to the NY bus, which puts you in midtown (Port Authority Bus Terminal) in 40 minutes in rush hour. There are also 3 different train lines within a 10 minute ride. I recently purchased my retirement home in Delaware although I am stll working here. I plan to retire to Delaware in a year or two. My home is a 3 bedroom, aluminum sided cape in a desireable middleclass single family neighborhood. At the risk of being pushy, If you were interested we could talk further, as I could sell at any time and live the next town over with my daughter until I retire. The house is on a 55 x 110 lot (10% oversized) and needs very little. The roof is about 10 years old, I just put $9,000.00 worth of windows on the 1st floor with lifetime warranty. Property taxes are about $550.00 a month ($1650.00 per qtr / 6500.00 p/yr). I would be looking for about $235,000.00 for the house. It also has a full basement but would need updating. If you are interested and respond to this post, I will be checking it. If not, good luck in your search. Thanks, Jack
