I have been looking for homes in the less than $400K range and have found some in Aberdeen, Old Bridge, Metuchen and Edison. I was wondering if someone can provide some information on what exactly is north edison? Are there certain sections? I found a house in the birchwood estates section of edison but I am unsure if this is the north section.
I have read that metuchen has much better schools than old bridge, this is why we have been looking there. My husband works in midtown NYC

Sorry, but Birchwood Estates is not the North Edison school district area.
The Edison zip code of 08820 is typically for North Edison and parts of 08817 go to the North Edison schools. Edison Woods or Durham Woods is about as central Edison as you can go when searching for the North Edison school district.

I would say North Edison schools are definitely better. We love it here, it's a great place to raise a family. Maybe you can check which high school would be in the district of the house you are looking at, to see if it's either north or south section, if it's hard to tell by the zip code. Good luck!

Oh, and less than $400k, that's going to be tough, if you are looking for a large/nice home, that is. Also, tons of commuters use Metro Park train service to get to NYC.

"The Best" is hard to quantify, except on your own criteria. Metuchen & Edison are "ranked" about the same (with Metuchen a few places higher) - but you are going to have to look at more than just that as your own personal criteria. Go to the schools, talk to the Principals, walk around the schools, and talk to other parents that might be around picking up their kids. We ultimately did choose Metuchen (and part of the reason was the school syetem), but only after a lot of legwork and research and based on our own personal criteria for what we wanted.

North Edison is not a separate community or school district from Edison. It is all Edison Township, which conisists of about 100,000 people. It has three zip codes: 08820, 08817 and 08837. Typically the the northernmost part of the township (covered by 08820) is more affluent than what the other two zips cover. But it is the same school district wherever you live. "North Edison" is just a mythical place created by real estate agents.
Metuchen is completely separate, even though Edison surrounds it on all sides.

But in terms of High schools, north Edison and south Edison ARE different. I know Edison is one town consisting of 3 diff zip codes yada yada.... I went to grade school in south edison. I went to high school in Metuchen...all private schools though.
If you live in north edison you go to JP Stevens....ranked high. South edison is Edison High School.
I would pick Metuchen over Edison any day, except taxes could suck.

Oh definitely. Metuchen is FAR more affluent than any part of Edison. Lots of old money there.
I can say though that you really cannot go wrong in either one. My sisters went to Edison High (south) and have fond memories of it. Parents were impressed with it too. I do know some people that went to JP which is the better ranked of the two, but from what I have heard the two high schools really are not that different aside from ethnicity/socioeconomic makeup of student body and all that crapola.
