What are babysitter rates in the Northwest area of Bergen County -- Allendale, Ramsey, Mahwah, etc.?
What is the "going" hourly rate for:
an infant, in the parents home?
a toddler, in the parents home?
an older child -- say 5 to 8 or so?
What about an child where the babysitter has to drive the child (in the babysitter's car) to activities -- picking the child up from school, going to karate, soccer, etc.?
$13-15 an hour. Maybe a little more for a babysitter who takes care of a lot of driving and logistics after school for school-age kids, which is harder and is going to require a different type of person than someone who just stays in the house with an infant, etc.
I'd say it also depend on the experience level of the babysitter. We often use one of two teenage sisters that live down the street from us to babysit our early elementary aged children. They are Freshman and Sophmores, and can't drive, but they do a good job with our kids.
We generally pay around $10/hr. and then throw on a tip.
For an adult who is really acting more as a nanny, I'd say the $13-15 range is about right.
If it is a standard babysitter that will watch a child or two while a parent goes out, I'd say 10 bucks an hour. But if it one of those instances where the sitter will drive, pick kids, up, etc, I'd say 15. At least that's what I'd pay a sitter.
Sounds like you may be using the term babysitter in lieu of nanny. Babysitting is short-term with limited responsibility. Nannies take on a lot more commitment and responsibility. I know nannies (and mannies) who make $20 per hour in Bergen, Essex, and Morris -- all watch two or three siblings.
anything over $10 is a rip-off! Really -$15/hr for a babysitter, Really? Must be nice to be rich!
while I totally feel your , as a parent of 3, I find it a bit crazy how I'll tip the waiter with no hesitation 20%, yet the sitter who needs total incentive everyone freaks out about paying an extra $3/hour then 'normal'. Even young people know the difference in a buck. Pay your sitters well. Pay your nanny better. But overall, don't cheap out on what is technically a stranger...

Good advice. Don't cheap out on the person taking care of your kids.
