I am considering a job in Franklin Lakes, NJ and am looking for information. We are a family of 5 (kids are 6, 3, almost 1) and would be moving up from TN. My wife is from Maine originally and I was born and raised in Norway. We are outdoors people, love to travel, etc.

Anything you can share about the area would be great. We love cute downtown areas, hiking, being out on water, skiing, and so on.

Thanks!

Well, it's a very nice area in general. Loads of outdoor activities within a short drive. Cute downtowns too. New York of course.

Not sure what else to add! I guess I would add that houses are expensive as are the property taxes, but you probably already know that.

Franklin Lakes is a very beautiful township with many upscale homes. I think you should look at Kinnelon Township, whats most important is the great school system. It's everything you are looking for.

Much of Franklin Lakes is very expensive relative to the rest of NJ. It will be even more expensive compared to TN home prices.

Franklin Lakes is close to Mahwah which borders NY state and has lots of hiking areas, rivers and lakes for outdoor activities. It has Darlington County park with a large swimming area with sand beaches and an 18 hole public golf course next door. I believe it's the largest township in Bergen County. Not as upscale as F.L. but still has homes over $1M and lots below that.

Ramsey has a better downtown than Mahwah, schools are very good, train to NYC and close to F.L. as well. Worth a look.

Try Oakland. It is next door to Franklin Lakes. Lots of hiking nearby (Ramapo Mountains), even in the town itself. Oakland is less upscale than Franklin Lakes and is blue-collar at heart. However, recent years have seen home prices go way up and Oakland is definetly more upper-middle class now. The downtown is OK, just a bit spread out and hence not easy to walk around. But the town is a very desirable place to live with excellent public schools and little crime. (Note: a very affordable home in Oakland may be in the floodplain, though a recent dam put a stop to most of the flooding. But still, I would buy a home in Oakland that is not in the flood plain.) There is also a bus service to Port Authority in NYC, though it may take almost a hour to get there. The homes tend to be older, lots of ranches and slit-levels from the 1950's and 1960's when the town became populated. Though, if you have the money and a large family, try the Ramapo River Reserve Homes in the Ramapo Mountains. The scenary is very lovely but many of the homes lack much in the way of property. However, I am sure that you may be able to find something in Oakland.

As for the skiing in NJ...There is a very small ski resort at Campgaw in next door Mahwah. A rope pole and two chair lifts, nothing like what you may be used to in Maine or Europe. However, if you want a little more space to ski, the only other resort is in Vernon, in Sussex County. It is about an hour from Oakland. We used to call it "Vernon Valley" but I forget what the name used today is. It is three mountains but if you are used to skiing in Maine or Europe, it may disappoint. It is jokingly called the "ice box" due to the ice that is so prevalent on the slopes. If you want better skiing I would take the 1 1/2 hour drive to the Catskills in NY State.

Lakes - Here you are in luck. There is lots of lakes in northern New Jersey. The best is Greenwood Lake that straddles the border with NJ and NY State. The NJ section is in West Milford in Passaic County and also Sussex County. I reckon it takes about 45 tops to get there from Oakland. Lots of fishing and other outdoor activities are available on the lake.
