Hi,
We are being relocated to NJ from VA. We have been looking for homes in Bergen County around Ridgewood, Oradell, etc....with our budget is getting hard to find what we want in those areas. So we decided to look in Englewood....we loved this one house and the location, but I can't find much info on the schools...or not enough. Can someone tell me how the elementary schools are in Englewood? Also, is it a good area in general?
Thank you!
This is WHY you can find relatively affordable houses there.
If you're working somewhere near oradell/ridgewood, consider going further out from NYC, why pay a premium for the ultra-fast northeast bergen commute to the city if you're not using it?
I live in Englewood and my son attends the elementary schools. While it's not terrible-he will not be going past 4th grade there-we are moving. I do not recommend you moving to Englewood if you plan on sending your kids to public school. Englewood is a great town to live in-most of my neighbors send their children to catholic school or private school. Good luck!
The schools in Englewood are NOT good. I know three different young families that moved there without taking the school situation into account because they either didn't think of it or because they thought they would be long gone by the time the kids got to school.
Needless to say with the housing market the way it is they are all stuck there for the time being. One family is choosing to send their children to Englewood schools but is very anxious to leave no later than 2nd grade, another chose an affordable catholic school in another town with a bit of a drive and the third family has chosen a very pricey (over $20K for kindegarden!!! YIKES!!) academy in the area. They are also hoping to sell thier home before the next child reaches school age since they cannot afford 2 tuitions at the academy.
Ridgewood's school system is much, much better. Which is why the houses are more expensive but if your children's education is important to you (and it sounds like it is) I suggest you buy a smaller less expensive house in Ridgewood rather than let yourself get wowed by an extra large arts and crafts style mini mansion in Englewood.
Englewood is only a good place to live (rent, not buy) before you have children, or if you have ties to the independent schools (Dwight-Englewood, Elisabeth Morrow) or Orthodox school (Moriah) there.
Did you look at the elementary schools on greatschools.org?
