Which is considered the better town? We are looking for a good commute to NYC as well as the ability to commute to Princeton. Colonia seems like is has good schools and houses are nice (we are looking at 750k - 1mm). So it Metuchen. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Both areas are nice but Metuchen is better by far. Colonia has a very nice section but Metuchen is larger and has a lot more choices.

Metuchen.
There is a section of Colonia, near the high school, that is lovely, but Metuchen is better.
In that range you also might consider Monmouth county. Holmdel and Middletown come to mind off hand. Near Princeton you have West Windsor and South Brunswick, as well. You have a lot of options.

I would agree with Julian, South Brunswick and Princeton Junction would be good choices as well since there are many homes in that price range.

no comparison
Metuchen has a direct train to NYC and free shuttle service to the station for residents. It has a nice downtown with restaurants, shops and nice older homes. I'm a realtor, but I bought my house in Metuchen when I was child free and commuting to Manhattan. It's a great town with good schools and alot of community activities for families. There are also alot of other nice towns in the area, depending what you're looking for, but Colonia would not be on my short list. <Moderator cut- Knock off the advertising or we'll have to ban you.>

Free shuttle service? That is a nice perk.

Metuchen, Metuchen, Metuchen what a lovely town! So much character. We have friends that live there. And it's easy to see why. Just great in so many ways. Good luck to you.
