Hi everyone. I hope you are having a wonderful Tuesday.
I am moving back to NJ in a few weeks (hubby and cat to follow). I will be living in Downtown Jersey City for the first three months and working in Short Hills but imagine I will also spend time in our Manhattan office. I am happy to commute to work by car.
This is the first time my husband has lived near a big city and part of the reason we are moving back is to take advantage of having NYC in close proximinity so we would like to live within a half hour commute of the City. Likewise, we also love the outdoors particularly hiking so we need good access to main highways.
I personally would love to live in downtown JC but I think it will be tight on our current budget...at least until my husband finds a job. We are not really ready to move to true suburbia. A few of my friends have recommended Montclair but I don't know much about it. I have friends in JC, Metuchen, and Edison.
i'd go with jersey city. look in jersey city heights, or just rent something very modest to start until your husband gets settled. then if you decide you're not using that proximity to NYC as often as you thought you would, move out towards short hills so you have a very easy commute, and still only an easy train ride or drive into the city.
If you're living in Jersey City, it would probably be best if you commuted using public transportation. The PATH runs frequently, and if you can't walk to it, you can take a bus. It will be cheaper (and possibly faster) than driving into Mannhattan.
The PATH costs $1.75, or $13 for a 10-trip ticket. Buses cost $54 for a monthly pass, so you'll save a lot by using public transportation.
Good luck!
