Hello all,

Considering buying a home located by Morton, Maltby, Tompkins ave, can anyone tell me through experience what you've encountered or seen in that area? From what we see so far, the area looks nice, very quiet, and family/residential oriented.

Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Also any experiences you've had would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I lived briefly on Sherman Ave. around the corner from the area you're asking about. It was a quiet residential neighborhood, lots of families with young children. There's a less pleasant area a bit to the north, across 7th Street, but it wasn't much of a problem when I lived there and may have improved since then.

My parents still live in So. Plainfield and I spent part of my childhood there and graduated from So. Plainfield High School so I know this area well as I travel Tompkins to get to my parents' home.

The pros: The area area around this street have many well kept homes there. I have not heard or read about any burglaries. The South Plainfield police keep a very tight lid on things. There are many young families with kids living there. The schools are good but not the greatest as you would find in Millburn for example. I have a single girlfriend that lives on Clinton Ave. and has not had any problems. Franklin elementary and the high school are close by if you have kids.

The cons: You will be very close to the Plainfield border. If you go to either end of Tompkins and head north to Plainfield you will be in ghetto land. Seventh Street is not safe. I was personally harassed by thugs while driving in my car in the past year, there were over 35 shootings in an area less than a 10 minute drive from Tompkins last year, they busted a bunch of Bloods & Crips about two years ago and many of them lived on 7th St. The aformentioned girlfriend used to live on Sherman Ave. and her ex-husband was attacked in their front yard. Do not even think about shopping in Plainfield proper (especially if you are female). There is plenty of shopping in Piscataway, Westfield and Woodbridge and you'll be a lot safer.

I hope this helps a bit and good luck with your decision. I'll be happy to answer any other questions (if I can) you might have.

I would say not to worry about a thing! I'm a South Plainfield resident.

Thanks I have been living here since July and I like it a lot, I have seen a bunch of police activity and cops always around but it seems to be controlled although a bit too close to home. Then again at my previous residence I lived on a very quiet street. Here, we're much closer to some quikchek's and 7-11's and such.
