My husband and I are starting our home search in the Middlesex/Somerset County areas. We are looking to spend no more than $275,000. We do have a young child who is not school age yet, but are planning on staying in our home for at least 7 years, so school is definitely an important factor for us.
Any ideas of towns that would fit in our price range that have a good school system? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You may want to take a look at East Brunswick. It has a good school system. A friend of mine lives in a townhome there and the homes in her complex cost anywhere from 175k to 300k.
East Brunswick is great but the taxes are high...you can also look at Edison, North Brunswick and South Brunswick.

I agree. All three of these towns are rougly equivalent and your dollar will significantly go further than in East Brunswick. My girlfriend and I have lived in North Brunswick for the past two years and we love it here.
EB is quite expensive, and as a lifelong resident of Middlesex County, I can tell you it was always considered the "snob capital" of the county.
Just to chime in, my sister and her family lived in North Brunswick, too, and raised their daughter there. They just moved last year to a 55+ community, but they loved their time in North Brunswick, thought it was a nice town and a good community.
I would try East Brunswick then South Brunswick. You should be able to get a townhouse for 275 now. You might even be able to get a single family, like a ranch.
North Edison has good school system, and East Brunswick. You might be able to get a condo with that price range or maybe a small ranch. The property tax is pretty high on both.
You could also check out South Plainfield. They have alot of older ranches and cape cods and the taxes are pretty reasonable. The school system is good just stay away from the areas that border Plainfield. The South Plainfield police keep a very tight lid on crime there and it is a safe town (my parents live there and I went through the school system).
Middlesex County: North Brunswick, South Brunswick, Edison - all within your budget, try to stay away from the Middlesex CC area and New Brunswick borders in Edison as there tends to be some crime there. East Brunswick has very high taxes so even if you find something in your range, you'll be paying a LOT in taxes. Metuchen and Milltown are also possibilities but you might not find something in these towns since they're smaller than the ones mentioned above.
Somerset: Bridgewater or any other town that sends kids to the Bridgewater-Raritan school district. Be very careful looking in the eastern side of Somerset County as some towns/areas are very flood prone such as Bound Brook.
