i don't have any kids yet but if i do i will move while they are still young unless there is tremendous improvement.

We have been waiting for improvement for 8 years and there has been none. The Elementary school is quite decent.

Thanks Snowpail!
I would have thought that there would be some separation of the community facilities for residents and tenants....even the location is more accessible to tenants!
Looks like residents who sign up when the clubhouse comes up may be subsidizing the costs for tenants.
Maybe something the homeowners association can consider taking up for clarification?

John:

Sorry to hear about this. One of my friends initially planned to move into Somerset area, but now looking for Bridgewater, Princeton and other areas, where school system is good.

First they thought of buying home in Somerset and putting children in private schools, but found such schools at prohibitively expensive. For example, Rutgers Prep School (on Easton Avenue) in Somerset charges $30,000 per year (last year it was $25k/yr). Many private catholic schools in the town charge $12k to $20k/yr. One school, Cedar Grove Prep School on Cedar Lrove lane charges $10k/yr. This is particularly difficult for parents with two young kids. Add other expenses of daycare, Kumon classes, etc.

When Franklin Township charges so much for property taxes, the school system should have been improved one. The elementary and middle schools are good, the problem is only Franklin High School, although students who are serious about study, will study anywhere. Still, parents do not want to take chances. Good students can also join Somerset County Vocational and Technical School at Bridgewater.

Some have been waiting for 30+ years and no improvement.

There are several elementary schools, and my neighbors moved out of state due to their experience with the older one being in Eliz. Ave. Didn't want to put their younger ones in the school past Kindergarten.

Has anyone noticed that they are making a huge stone welcome sign for the town house development? I thought we were going to get a nice welcome sign in our summerfields development? We only have a board - does anyone know when/if we will be getting a stone welcome sign?

Snowpail:

Out of about 40 Summerfields residents who attended testimony at Somerset County Tax Court House in Somerville last month, only about 3-4 people got some relief of 15-25%. Everyone's assessed home value is increased by $50,000 for the tax year 2014. On top of it, the tax rate has been increasing each year.

My Bergen model home had 1.8% ($7,800) tax in 2013, 2.0% ($8,800) in 2013 and 2.3% ($11,100) for 2014.

We do not know what to do. For 2014, the school tax portion is $7,000, but the schools have not changed since decades.

Manville bridge is opened now.

The bridge to Manville Main Street from Weston Canal Road is now opened for traffic. This historic bridge was shut down for few months to undertake bridge repair. It will be a great relief for people going to work on Hillsborough side or going to Walmart in Manville. The closure of bridge was causing traffic diversion via Metlars lane (to Amwell Road).
