Not sure what an "Italian neighborhood" looks like in 2011, except maybe Harrison Ave in Lodi. A lot of the Real Housewives Italians live in Montville for some reason. It's pretty expensive though.

Nutley is a good choice. There is housing in your price range, the neighborhoods are nice, people maintain their property, it has a lively main street (Franklin Ave.), good schools and a variety of good restaurants.

I would also suggest Verona which has excellent school ratings and a great community pool. Cedar Grove which borders on Verona could be a consideration as well.

I grew up on Long Island and have lived in New Jersey for the past twenty years. I've felt right at home in the Essex County area.

Good luck.

So far, as per the suggestions on these forum I've seen housing and neighborhoods in:
  1. Nutley
  2. Hazlet
  3. East Brunswick
Any other towns I should consider, considering the parameters in my original post?

Thanks to all who post, very helpful.

Yeah that is the problem with Long Island, one way in and one way out.

North Brunswick has a partially Italian community, although it is still quite diverse at that.

The Italian side of my family lives down in Monroe Township, and love it. Some really nice neighborhoods, though I don't know a lot about the housing costs - I know one branch of the family is in a townhouse that's well within your budget, another family is in a massive McMansion at the end of an amazing cul de sac - you could probably get a house in that area for $650K but not theirs. lol Defintely worth looking into. They have agreat friends and neighbors and it's reasonable distance to the city and the shore. Good luck!

Essex county comes to mind as noted, but taxes are kind of high, not that North Jersey will offer anything too low. If you want to look at some places around Nutley drop me a line, I'm in the next town over. We can stop at Aromi Di Napoli for some cannolis.
