I will be moving from CA SFO bay area to NJ, I will be working in Manhattan so looking for a location not exceeding train ride of an hour. We are mid 30s couple so do need some life in the town we live in. Two boys are 10 and 6 so good neighborhood with good school is top priority.

Life and schools are somewhat opposed. Out my way, the towns of Millburn and Short Hills cover schools and commute, and Millburn has a little downtown area with restaurants and such. Coming from the SF Bay maybe the sticker shock won't hurt too much.

When we moved here almost a year ago, we considered both renting and buying. To look for rentals, I used the Weichert NJ rental website. It seemed to be the most up to date and complete. Unfortunately, finding an updated rental is a challenging task. We ended up buying.

Not knowing your budget, I am not sure what to recommend, but here are the towns we looked at(all in Bergen County): Ridgewood, Wyckoff, Allendale, Glen Rock, Ho-Ho-Kus and Ramsey.

Good luck with your move!

Cranford or Westfield have good schools and are commuter towns. Springfield may also work as the bus service to Manhattan there is convienient.
