Millburn, Chatham, Summit and Westfield all have decent commute to NYC and top school. We live in Berkeley Heights which is 3 more stops after Summit. We drive to Newark and switch to PATH to get into NYC which is also a good commute option for lower Mahattan. However, if you want to rely on train commute only, your best bet will be Chatham, Summit and Westfield. Also you may also want to check out Livingston even though there is only express bus to NYC.
Those are solid places you have listed, however, I grew up in Kinnelon, and could not be happier. Top 20 Public school, small classes, AP's, tight knit community, sheltered, yet 40 mins from NYC. Check it out. Along those lines, Mountain Lakes, Montville, and other Morris County Areas.
"40 minutes from NYC"...Really? Maybe at 3:00AM. I lived in Clifton and it was pretty much 1 hour door to my work door in NYC. Kinnelon is further north and west of Clifton. I'm thinking it's 1.5 hours (one way commute) to NYC during rush hours.
