I need a little help. I am looking into a shore rental at LBI. I would like to know what part of the island is good for a rental. We are two families with young children. Were looking at beach haven but not sure if this is the best place or possibly ship bottom. Also, if we are on one part of the island how difficult is it to get to the other side for the beach? Can the few miles take a long time with traffic. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for an area beyond LBI please let me know (dont want to start a thread about the best shore town please). Believe it or not I have never been to the jersey shore so this will be a first in many ways. Thanks.
id definitely go with beach haven as that is where there is more action and you have fantasy island. the distance from the beach to the bay varies depending on where you are. its never super far but it can be a long walk if you rent a house by the bay. the island is about 18 miles long. it is very slow when you are driving saturday morning or i think sunday evening time when people are coming or going in mass. but other times the traffic flows decently. there are a lot of lights though and dont you dare go over the speed limit (which i think is usually 35mph).
ditto beach haven with younger kids. get a home east of bay avenue (aka "ocean side") and you won't have a long walk to the beach. if you get a home on the west side (aka "bay side"), stay south of around 12th street - the walk won't be that bay. however, the island does widen around the fantasy island area down to engleside ave to be aware of that.
just look at google maps.
but bottom line, yes, stay in beach haven. fantasy island though is EXPENSIVE. if you do thundering surf water park, get there before it opens and the lines won't be bad.
I think it depends on what you are looking for. I think the northern part of the island is much quieter then the south end and I think the beaches are nicer and there are still a bunch of things for the kids to do in Shipbottom and Surf City. If you are a family that will be mostly enjoying the beach and don't need a ton of things available to entertain the kids, then definitely don't write off the northern side of the island.

Think I would suggest Shipbottom. Think you are close enough to the bay and ocean side. Things to do there, but you can always drive to lighthouse and also to Beach Haven.
what is there to do in ship bottom? we have had a house on lbi since 1993 and the only thing i can think of going to ship bottom for was raimondos. thats not to say there is nothing, i know there are some stores and restaurants, but its much less than the beach haven area. if you want things to do and activity nearby, then id go beach haven. if you are just going to go to the beach and hang out at the rental house, then you can go further north.
We've stayed at a house on 17th street in Surf City several times. There is a bay beach there with a playground. My kids love to go down to Beach Haven, but it is crowded, and attractions can add up quickly. I like to rent bikes, and head north on the island. There is another nice park on the bay side just north of Surf City.
Wherever you decide to rent, a wagon can be a lifesaver. Surf City is only 3-4 blocks wide, so the beach is a quick walk. Parking, however, is very difficult.

That's why we used to rent on 16th. That bay beach is great when you have small children. A couple of years we stay in Ship Bottom and a few times in Beach Haven. They were all fine; there were advantages and disadvantages to each location.
I've always preferred Surf City because of its central location.
