I want to say, sometimes there is a long line to get off an exit (like to get on the 295 north ramp from 42 north at rush hour) and some people try to go around everyone and then cut into the ramp lane much farther up...in that case I think they deserve to be blocked. It s very frustrating when I'm waiting in line like a good girl and all these other people try to cheat!
I deal with this all the time on my way home from work at 5pm. Not one person once in a while, continuously people try to go around and cut in at the last second. And I can understand if the sign is in a bad spot that out of towners don't know, but the exit sign is perfectly placed and these people think the world revolves around them. I'm awesome at smiling, waving, and not letting them get in. Makes their blood boil.
For the OP, I don't know why NJers do this. Some are notorious, the only reason I'll get on someones ass in this situation is if I'm going much faster and they cut me off going to slow, all while they think they are flying at 70mph.
I think NJers have adapted by using the quick flash of turn signal and then get over. I just do this because it makes me feel legally compliant.
I learned to drive in NJ and moved out of state in my 30s. It was a big shock to find that drivers here (northern Vermont) generally let you merge onto the Interstate and change lanes when you signal rather than turning their morning commutes into some kind of cat-and-mouse game. Of course there are jerks on the road, but I rarely find driving stressful even though I commute several hundred miles each week.
Now, when I return to NJ I find driving to be very unnerving. It takes a few days to get used to the craziness.
The secret I think is to follow the golden rule. Would you want someone to cut you off? Of course not. Would you want someone to drive 50 mph in front of you in the left l(passing) lane? Of course not. Would you want someone prevent you from changing lanes when you need to and have used your signals? Of course not. Why not just drive the way you would like all of the drivers around you to drive?

unfortunately, using the signal has about a 40% chance of the person letting you in and 60% they will speed up so you cant fit. so i just go without signaling beforehand, eliminating the possibility they will try to stop me. but once you get used to doing it, its not really complicated.
I've lived in North Jersey most of my life and some of the world's worst drivers reside here ... it's a challenge each day to control yourself ... light turns yellow: wail on horn, light turns green: wail on horn, tailgating: pass and flip the finger, cut someone off: and hit the brakes ...
The worst is when you're on the Garden State Parkway, Route 80, or the NJ Turnpike and the guy in front of you is in the fast lane, no cars in front of him and he's going 65 ... it's the fast lane ahole, MOVE OVER !
My take.. the most arrogant drivers personal life is probably miserable.
Either they are very unhappy with where they are in life or very stressed.
Everything's going well...just laugh off those drivers!

but those are great opportunities for brake checks!

This drives me insane! Especially when it's a fancy sports car, you paid $70K for that thing and you're using it to drive 5 miles below the speed limit?!? Step on it and get the hell out of the way!

For some reason it irks me more when I see that same sports car in the slow lane doing 50.
i dont find driving in new jersey to be particularly challenging.
judging from your previous post, you sound like you don't drive enough or you're in an area where there's not that much people on the road.
