Sad that I never knew that. I own some condos in Newport and thought they were pricey. I rent them to young professionals. I should look into Hoboken.

Another question to you: what is your opinion of Clinton Street (the flat is just next to Newark Campus). We've got direct bus to the workplace so it's quite good location for us.
Does devil walk around there?:-)

It's hard to trust anonymous posters on a forum so why don't you do a google news search on Newark NJ and see what kind of lovely articles come up. Or do a search on most dangerous cities in america and see how many times Newark is mentioned.

I definitely wouldn't move there and I wouldn't ride my bike around there unless I had some kind of death wish.

There are some parts of Jersey City that are safer and nicer, you may also want to try other parts of Hudson County: North Bergen, Union City & West NY, still low income but a lot less dangerous.
The WHOLE CITY isn't what you described. There are areas where a sane person should stay away from 24/7, but there are a couple of areas that make you think you are in Short Hills or Nutley. I'm not joking or exaggerating when I say that. The danger is located in areas that are not hard to avoid. You mention JC, yet there are areas that rival Newark's worst(Greenville? Bergen-Lafayette?)

To the OP: Clinton Street is fine for the most part. It's in the downtown central business district, so you're not in the suburb but you're not in the ghetto either. Just use common sense. But I guess if you got a problem with poor black folks wondering about asking for change you won't like it.

I've always heard rumors about these so called "nice" areas of Newark that would make you think you are in some other town but:

1)These are the exception and not the rule. The chances of someone who is a. not from the area and b. obviously looking for the most affordable option ending up in one of these mythical pockets of desirability are about as good as winning the lottery, twice--in one week.

2) If you want to be in a town that makes you think that you are in Nutley or Short Hills why not move to--wait for it--Nutley or Short Hills? And you won't have to worry about turning down the wrong block and ending up in an area that makes you think you are in Newark.

And as far as JC, I agree with you a lot of parts of JC are terrible. I remember checking out a few apartments in Greenville when I was first moving to NJ and unfamiliar with the neighborhoods. Didn't even make it inside of some because I refused to even get out of my car. BUT it is easier to find a respectable area of JC over Newark, even on a budget. Which is why I said it's A LITTLE BETTER.

My real suggestion is other parts of Hudson County like North Bergen, Union City and West NY. These are still very affordable urban areas and a little bit ghetto but not as outright dangerous.

And those "poor black people wandering around asking for change", why not just call a spade a spade? The people asking for change, they come in many colors, not just black; they are not poor, they are addicts; they are not asking for change, they are attempting to harrass and frighten you into helping support their addictions.

Look into Linden, Elizabeth, Hillside, Union, Springfield, Maplewood or the otherside into Kearny or Harrison.

DO NOT plan to get around via bicycle. It would be suicidal. not to mention insane and crazy.

Public transportation from Kearny/Harrison/E.Newark-tiny town sandwiched between Kearny/Harrison will work fine. Several buses into Newark and then a transfer to the airport bus.

You can also consider N. Arlington and Lyndhurst in Bergen County or Belleville in Essex County. Any further than that and you are looking at major commute times.

BTW, there are some beautiful areas in north Newark, and someone mentioned Ironbound also.

Bicycle riding local only. There are no bicycle routes/lanes anywhere on the way to Newark Airport.

They aren't rumors; they're facts. Forest Hill, Upper Vailsburg/Ivy Hill, Ironbound(except for the projects and towards the Turnpike) and southeastern Weequahic. All middle class with low crime rates. I've been through these areas unlike most sheltered NJites so I know what I'm talking about.
