This is not to offend any group of people, but my husband who worked for General Motors in Tarrytown, NY and commuted from Vernon, when I asked why some of his buddies wouldn't come to Vernon for a visit, he said that they told him it was too cold, and they preferred the warmth of South Carolina and would rather visit the South before visiting NJ.
My own opinion is that Sussex Cty is a great place to raise kids, my own kids were involved with sports, we had a lake to fish in/swim and in the summer there were swim teams and many of the parents volunteered to get the beach in shape/monitor the teams/set schedules. Every summer there is the Sussex Cty Farm and Horse Show over in Branchville, Waywaynada State Park
Space Farms in Sussex. Years ago, there was Gingerbread Castle in Hamburg since closed.
Yes, the area lacks a movie......we used to go to the Warwick Drive-In in the summer with the kids. We'd go bowling either in Franklin or Warwick, NY.
Of course, the area lacks some of the big name stores for shopping, but that comes with any area, you might live in.
hi i'm looking for folks who live in western nj who are considering commuting eastward using the new service at mount arlington station. if you'd be willing to speak with the newspaper, please contact me as soon as possible at psaha@starledger.com.
That is so untrue in every aspect of your statement
it is not the city so yeah, bless your lil ole heart, you may have to drive a few miles for a movie.
Oh please. I worked in Sussex for three years. I have never been in a more white bread town and I've been to backwoods Alabama. There is nothing to do in Sussex....except drugs. Read the local Sussex papers, you'll see what I'm talking about. In addition, why isn't there a local police presence? Oh yeah...that big kick back scandal a few years back. Bless your little ol redneck heart, but someone needs to kick a few people in the ass up there. By the way, I look forward to the bear hunt.
Oh come on, I think your exaggerating just a little, Sussex Cty. has changed over the last 25 yrs very little, other than the outrageous taxes. I have no idea where you got this impression of Vernon, Highland Lakes even Hamburg is a nice little town, great people, I have several friends that still live in Vernon including my daughter who was born and raised in Vernon, her husband also went to HS in Vernon, now my grandchildren go to schools and I hear nothing about a Deliverance type atmosphere. Maybe up on 515 where the new developement is, there is Deliverance types.......but Vernon
no way, heck, I remember when the judge/justice of the peace owned the old gas station on the corner, he could pump gas and hold court at the same time and there was one policeman to drive around town. One place to buy groceries/one place to buy a paper and one gas station. One elementary school and no high school. Loundsberry Hollow Rd. was a dirt road....Ah, yes, those were the days.!!!!!!!!
You are actually helping me make my point and I appreciate it. Vernon is ok, I'll give you that. But Hamburg, Highpoint, Highland Lakes....I mean Highland Lakes used to be a lake community for people on the weekends! Almost like a summer home. People actually live in those shacks! Personally, I think Sussex county is where poor people go when they get kicked out of Bergen county.

there is plenty to do in Sussex..and please...DRUGS are everywhere from urban cities to little small towns
as far as local police presence..are you referring to Sussex County as a whole or the individual town of Sussex Boro?
I am not a *redneck* I was born and raised in Jersey City, that said I am not a *snob* as well.
Doesn't suprise me you look foward to the bear hunt...just make sure it's a level playing field between you & the bear

Besides ski, what else is there to do? Drink? I went to a bar on Route 23 (across from the Domino's Pizza after you cross 94) and I was nearly killed. I asked for a Vodka Tonic..ooohhhhhh. I guess because I wouldn't drink Iron City Beer with a pull tab I was too ritzy for Scussex County. And you are right, drugs ARE everywhere. But if you look at the police blotter for Sussex and then compare it to Essex, Morris, Bergen, etc, drugs are 50 times worse.
And yes, Sussex Boro...you never answered that question.
I was just screwing around about the Bear hunt. But, I do think people go way too far over that.
God, I can't wait to get out of that awful county.

Ok I think that is a wee exageration
No, Sussex Boro does not have a police dept they are serviced by the NJ State Police
Do you have the stats..link.. to back up your statementon drug use ion sussex being 50 times worse then Morris, Essex, Bergen
Ok maybe Sussex County is not your kind of lifestyle..different strokes..but you painted the whole county and it's residents with a pretty broad brush
kind of like me saying all of Bergen County is a bunch of snobby NYC wannabees...not very fair or nice
