Squirrels are tenacious of life, there are just fine where ever they are.

Not knowing the area of which you speak makes it impossible to hazard a guess but they may have found downed trees with acrons or other fruit someplace else and are like migrants to a degree and chow down and bury all that fallen bounty away from home.

A squirrel may 'commute' to an area while living in another when it comes to towns and suburbia. they have a homing instinct and do have very rare migrations.

They are probably just laying low.
