Anyone live there? Would love to get some insight from a resident. How is it? House sizes? Yard sizes? School systems? Demographics? Safe Neighborhood?
No it is not near Palisades Pk/Ft. Lee. It is part of Woodbridge Twp, so you are in the Woodbridge school district which is pretty good overall. Woodbridge is quite large, about 100,000 people, but this is easily the most desirable section of Woodbridge, but also the most expensive. You have a large amount of mid-60's split levels/bi-levels etc as well as one very exclusve section known as Colonia Estates with large mansions.
Traffic in Woodbridge/Edison area does suck for the record. Near 1&9, GSP, 35 etc. But it is safe. Large Indian population.

its probably safe. its flanked between ft lee and palisades park - safe as it can get...
Huh? I don't know which town you are thinking of, but it most definitely is not Colonia, based on your description of the location!

Having been employed by the Woodbridge Twp school system for 35 years, I feel that I can comment accurately on the area.
While Colonia is probably the best area of the township, the crime rate has increased and the overall quality of life in the township has declined over the past dozen years or so as inner-city dwellers flooded into Avenel, which adjoins Colonia. Some sections of Woodbridge "proper" and Fords have also experienced this inner-city influx as well. The result is...not good in relation to both the crime rate and the quality of the school system.
Because Colonia HS draws students from Avenel as well as Colonia and a small portion of Iselin, the quality of that school has declined greatly over that period of time, but the elementary schools are still decent.
Overall, it is a "okay" area, albeit highly congested. And, to a great extent, the reputation of Colonia as an upscale place to live is now a bit outdated. For some reason, many folks think that the Colonia of today is as nice as the Colonia of the '60s, '70s, '80s, and the early '90s, but sadly, that is just not true. For that reason, almost everyone I know moved away from the area when they retired, and since they frequently retire to areas of NJ that have even higher property taxes, their retreat from Colonia is not in order to lower their property taxes, but is a desire to live in a safer, less congested area.

Colonia, overall, is not an area I'd call "unsafe". A lot depends on your price range, as there are houses in Colonia that range from probably $250k to several million dollars. I grew up in Avenel and lived in Iselin from 1999-2007 (both of which border Colonia), so I know the area well. What are you looking for in a house, and what's your budget?
Colonia has had a small exclusively-black section for...probably 30 or 40 years...maybe longer. Like most areas in Central NJ, it has become more diverse over the past 15 years or so, with many Indian families, more Hispanic families, and the integration of black families into areas other than the original "black section". It is still predominantly white, but it is definitely an area with racial diversity.
The closest train station is the Rahway station, on the Northeast Corrridor Line. The station is--at most--a 15 minute drive from most of Colonia.
