Don't forget, if you work in NYC and live in Brooklyn you're going to have to pay NYC city tax. That's about 3-5% of your income down the drain right there.

Well it depends. What neighborhood you'd live in, where in Manhattan you work, what kinda neighborhood so you WANT to live in. Brooklyn and Jersey City have great, bad and everything in between with commutes ranging from a breeze to mind numbingly awful. Depending on where you work in Manhattan, you'll have to pay for both PATH and NYCT Subway every month.

Really. As others have indicated, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this. Both have horrible ghettos, ritzy real estate, and everything in between. Both are separated from the city by water and require either tolls or public transportation to get to Manhattan.

However, if you have a car, in Jersey City someone will pump your gas for you!

brooklyn is probably more affordable overall. if you are on the south side of brooklyn, you can get places for prices that if you paid them in jc you would probably get shanked the moment you step out of your front door.

Yeah but the commute might be longer.

And you wouldn't get shanked in Brooklyn? Oh please , Brooklyn and Jersey City are about the same when it comes to good and bad areas...

did your mother tell you that? she probably has a better understanding of the concept of paying for a home than you. i know brooklyn has bad areas. but it has areas that are safe and still cheap. in jc, if you want safety thats something you pay for.

I was researching different places and Jersey City def seems more expensive unless its the hood. Not sure about commute yet, just trying to figure out in general.
