My husband lost his credit card a few weeks ago. We cancelled the card immediately with no fraudulent purchases. Mastercard gave us new cards with a new number. We've been using then without a problem for a few weeks. We got a call today stating that somebody was using the new card/number at a few stores in the Bronx. They used it a few places, then tried to spend $2,000 at BJ's and were denied. Mastercard said that they had a physical card.
Any ideas how this could happen? We have our physical credit cards.

Yep. Someone skimmed your card when you used it at a gas station, restaurant, etc. and uploaded it to a BS card.
It's been picking up lately in NJ. A coworker of mine had her number stolen, and she thinks it was at the gas station. Another friend got her cc bill and saw two charges for gas at that station for the same day--the $42 she had charged to fill her tank, plus another $50.
I would avoid using credit cards to pay for gas right now, folks.

Using credit/debit cards are ok. Just kept an eye on them and the attendent.
Nobody checks if the stripe matches the card, so if the crook has a card he knows has been deactivated, he can overwrite the stripe with another one he got through skimming.

When was the last time someone actually looked at your signature on the card?
For years I've been writing "picture ID required" instead of my sig and no one has ever asked for it.
My debit got hacked at a gas station a few years ago (I'm 99% sure it was there for several reasons) and someone bought 2 one-way tickets to Santiago, Chili with it ($2600!). They never had the card but bought them online. Commerce (at the time) was wonderful and put my money back the next day, but it was scary at the time. What shocked me is that no one at the bank seemed surprised or overly concerned, guess it's a normal part of life now
