I forgot to move my vehicle for street cleaning and received my very first ticket. The ticket is $60 bucks. I am a recent college grad still looking for a job and I literally do not have the money to spare for the ticket. Of course, since it was my mistake, I do intend to make up for it.
Would I be able to do community service instead of paying the fine? Has anyone been able to do this for a parking ticket? Or would I be wasting my time (and increasing the amount through court fees) by going to court and asking this of the judge?
NJ seems to have no real standard for this. I know that in California, there is an simple process to request community service in lieu of fines for minor offenses.
Don't know which town. In South Orange the judge will basically tell you to call everyone you know begging for money. If you don't come up with it, you get to take an indefinite vacation at the jail.
I have never heard of community service either, not for a ticket anyway.
You can fight it, but $60.00 isn't a lot of money. When I was going to school FT, and **** poor, I accidently parked 'next' to a handicap spot and my tires were ON the blue line, not taking over the spot, just ON the blue line. And, I got fined $350.00. I tried to fight it, and did not win ....
Not to be an ass but if you cant afford a $60 parking ticket maybe you cant afford to own a car NJ.
Im not going to assume I know you or your situation, but in the grand scheme of things, $60 is not a LOT of money. Beg your parents, sell something (ipod, cell, clothes, bicycle, etc) Dont pay your cell phone bill, dont pay your insurance, dont buy beer for a few months, dont buy cigs, dont put gas in your car, dont do something that would save you $60 and then you;ll have enough to pay your fine. It may be hard, It may be difficult and inconvenient for a while, but losing your license or spending time in jail will be MORE inconvenient.
Life sucks sometimes and, the sooner you learn to suck it up and take care of your responsibilities, rather than find ways around them, the better you will be in the long run.
