I could only imagine. I doubt they can really do anything in most cases

They can not do anything about it. Most of the old timers get one in their career.

I would say that I don't think I would sweat it, since there is nothing you can do (and the majority are suicides), but who knows how I would feel if the unfortunate situation actually happened.

Crappy part of life, but nothing anyone can do

I read another article about this once, and it said engineers are sometimes told to expect that they will kill three people during their career. One engineer's story was horrible. It was in the Chicago area, and she saw a car run through the gates and she knew she was going to hit it. The train cut the car in half, dragging the front with the mother, who was killed, down the track, and the back of the car was left with a toddler in its seat screaming, "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" Just to try to save what, thirty seconds? A minute?

My father was an engineer for Conrail and once someone committed suicide on the tracks. He blew the horn and tried to stop it but it was too late. It really messed him up but as others said, there was nothing he could do. I think the thing that gets to them more then anything is they are obviously the first on the scene and they get off the train and see the mangled body. Try getting that image out of your head.
