I would go with Bayonne if you are a female. Male, could go either way.

The HBLR goes pretty far south in Bayonne: Down to 8th Street. With no problems, a trip from 8th Street to Exchange Place takes around 20 minutes.

The is also the 10 bus that goes up JFK Blvd where you can transfer to the PATH at Journal Square. The schedule is here: http://www.coachusa.com/CoachUsaAsse...1099Ssched.pdf

This trip would take close to an hour since you have to make the bus->PATH transfer.

There is also the #81 bus that brings you to Exchange Place in about 45 minutes. Here's the schedule: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0081.pdf

So basically, if you can find something near the HBLR, you should go for it.

Going from pretty much any place in Bayonne around the HBLR to Exchange place is a quick smooth commute.

if u gon go to nyc a lot then the heights, if not and if u just want a calm place to live-Bayonne
Bayonne a little cheaper and more car friendly if you ever need to get a car and park, however it can also get pretty boring.
Im in Bayonne since recently and was comparing these places too like u, and it all depends on the preference.

I found a place in The Heights. It's a ten minute bus ride from my work. The stop is one block away from the apt. I couldn't beat that.

Plus I needed easy access to drive downtown or into Hoboken.
