ha - i just read your original post from 07. what's funny is today you can find something that fit your $250-300K 2007 budget - thank goodness you didn't buy!
The real question is would you move back for another opportunity?
I would absolutely move back, but not so sure about the Mrs.
If I do move back, I will definitely want to live East of 287, between 80 and 78, if I have a growing family.
Else, along the Hudson would be ideal.

Really, I think you missed out on some of NJ if this was your experience. Community Theate, Morris Museum, Newark Museum, NJ PAC, Paper Mill Playhouse come immediately to mind. I think there are as many options as any area where you are living an hour from a major city.

I quite agree that I have missed out on local NJ cultural fare. Looking back, I don't think I gave any of these institutions a fair shake, expept may be the Liberty science center.
But, the word of mouth for these options is just not there. If you are going out with a group, it is hard to get every one to agree to spend an evening in Jersey, except may be the riverfront. It is probably reflective of the company I keep. Given that, NYC is a safe bet with the limited time and opportunities.
