thank you, every body says EO is terrible and I get confused and mixed up with that. I looked at the website neighborhoodscout.com and found out myself : Newark, NJ 85% East Orange 80% crime ratings

I know a few folks that live in EO and never ever had a problem (particularly off of Central ave. and near Orange park/VA). I don't know, different folks for different folks I guess.
The VA hospital is my main hospital and I once considered buying property in the area (it has a suburban feel to it, but the taxes suck).
You also have to filter the different kind of posters on this forum: there's the 'never lived there/would never live there crowd' (which often let headlines form their opinions) then there's the folks that can give you real info b/c they either work and/or live there.

(forgive the age of the thread)
Is the City of Orange proper more decent than E. Orange? Just looking at the map I'm thinking above 280, west of Brick Church.
Orange is attractive to me with all the train stations, and the large West Indian population, but at my age I'm also done with living in drug neighborhoods with stick-up kids on the corner...

By the numbers, Orange has worse crime than E.O. I can only judge by appearances (I don't live there), but I'd say the part of Orange north of Main is probably best, aside from the part nearest the East Orange border; there's kind of a couple of blocks of no-mans-land at the border.
The crime rate in Orange is worse than East Orange, but the numbers are inflated because the population of Orange is only half that of East Orange. So it affects the per capita numbers. Anyway, Orange is perfectly fine during the day. I have been all over the city during the day, particularly around Main St. and the train station and never had a problem. After dark it's not really an area I would want to walk around. There seem to be a lot of robberies at night.
OK thanks. I guess the best thing is to visit a few times day & night and see what feels right.
