Hello All!

I will be moving up north within the next three months for a new job. I will be working near Newark airport. I am looking for apartments that are in the commuting area... either driving or utilizing mass transit. I would appreciate any input on what areas would be safe for a young professional. I can afford no more than $1500 a month. Thank you in advance!

Well, that area is deceiving. You have the pits of hell, and within 15 minutes some of the wealthiest areas as well (Westfield, Short Hills, etc)

Look into Linden, Parts of Rahway, Kearny, Union, Woodbridge all have some rental communities and proximity to tranportation

Welcome, good luck to you

That's a good way to put it. Woodbridge is a good choice because there are a lot of apartments, and your price range should be fine, and they are on the North Jersey Coast Line train, which has trains that stop at Newark Airport. It would also be an easy drive.

What kind of atmosphere are you looking for? Age group? Maplewood/SO is close, easy commute and affordable. Beautiful area.

Hi Veuvegirl!

I am looking for a safe, quiet middle-aged working community... Middle aged being 30's / 40's. I don't do the club scene or loud parties... Jazz bars or an irish pub is more my speed. Does Maplewood fit this? Thanks for the input!

Maplewood fits it for sure. As do South Orange and Montclair (some of the more popular towns in the Newark area). Believe it or not, the list of places to avoid can be easier to list than the opposite. Avoid: Newark itself (most areas), East Orange, Orange, and Irvington (maybe also Elizabeth?).

For more cost efficient options close by check out Rutherford, Nutley, Lyndhurst, and parts of Bloomfield.

Great! Thank you so much! You all have been very helpful! There are a lot more apartments out there than I thought, now that I have specific areas to look at.
