When Borders was going out of business, I bought a bunch of books pretty cheap. One is called Fighting To Be Heard-New Jersey in History, and it's all stories of NJ's involvement in wars over the years.

Texas Tower 4 was a disaster that took place at radar tower installation built during the Cold War off the coast of Barnegat. I never in my life heard this story before. Is anyone else familiar with it?

Here's a link I found on the story.

I recall the incident fairly well--or as well as someone would recall something that transpired when he was just 13 years old. I remember watching some TV program in the evening while a bulletin notice came across the screen, with the announcer gravely stating that this tragic incident had taken place off the NJ coast. More complete details emerged within a day or two.

Of course, since these offshore radar installations were not known to the general public at that time, there was a lot of confusion at first regarding exactly what happened, and where. This was a genuine tragedy for the victims and their families, and one that apparently many folks nowadays are not aware of!

I would have been 2 and a half, so naturally I don't remember (although a week after this happened, my mother came home from the hospital with a new baby sister, and I do remember that. I thought it was a doll, and then it moved and made scary noises.)

I don't recall anyone ever mentioning it, though. My late father, who was a disabled WWII vet, would have taken notice of this.

I'm a bit of a disaster junkie, and it interested me. I did find another site that mentioned the 50th anniversary and memorialized those who died.
