We are having a hard time finding 3 bedroom rentals in the Belle Mead Area. Is it legal for us to live in a 2 bedroom with 2 adults, children 13, 5, 16months?
I am seeing conflicting answers from general google searches. Something about square footage being a consideration. We are looking for apartments with around 1920 square feet.

Thanks!

AShley

Apartments with 1900 square feet? Those are massive as far as apartments go. I'm surprised you aren't finding any 3 bedroom.

I raised 2 kids in a 1000sq ft apartment and while things are a bit tight i didnt find it impossible.

The particular area that we are looking has VERY nice apartments. 1 car garages, lots of room, but only 2 official 'bedrooms'. I am concerned not whether we would 'fit' but whether it is legal and not in violation of any state or county ordinances. In NC for example you can only have 2 people per bedroom. So our family of five wouldn't 'legally' fit into the 2 bedroom category.

My, how times have changed. My two brothers and I all shared a bedroom growing up, and somehow we survived.....

i didnt realize the law regulated this sort of thing. my older brother has an apartment in manhattan that doesnt even have one "legal" bedroom. they have one daughter and they stuck her in their "bedroom" and they sleep in a loft area on a mattress on the floor. my wife always asks how they will have another child there and i say "that in nyc, people manage to have lots of kids in small spaces. you do what you have to do."

i know an employee living in brooklyn had him, wife, mother in law and 2 kids living in a one bedroom apartment. i doubt that kind of thing is very uncommon there.

My former house wasn't that big. A two bedroom that's 1900 SF? sounds like the renter is inflating the statistics a bit. But there is nothing to stop three kids in one room. My familie's first house was probably 1100 SF.

These apartments are called Pike Run Apartments and the floor plan says 1920 sq. ft. I think they are including the basement/garage in that number. This is really more of a town house. THe problem is that there are about 5 -6 similar rental communities in the area but none have "3 bedrooms". One has a 'study' so maybe that would count as 3 bedrooms. I know it is big but many states are so up tight. In NC it is a 'heart beat' law. As in only two heart beats per 'bedroom'. I also read that it is illegal for children of opposite sex to share a bedroom. ???The problem is that my information is kind of general and I can't locate which states, counties exactly have these laws. Hopefully we will be ok. My husband's employer already rented a temporary two bedroom for us even though there are 5 of us so I guess it is ok.
