Does anyone know if there is a sizeable Jewish population in Summit? We are thinking about moving there, but we don't want our children to be one of the only Jewish kids in their classes in public school. (Our ideal would be to have at least 4-5 other Jewish kids in their class.) We get the feeling from touring the area that there is not much of a Jewish population - but maybe we are wrong. Any advice would be appreciated!
Livingston doesn't work for us b/c we really need parking at a midtown direct train. So, we've narrowed it down to Summit and Short Hills. We already know Short Hills has a sizeable Jewish population, but we know we can get more bang for our buck in Summit - which is why we wanted to research it a bit more.

Summit has a decent sized Jewish population, I believe around 6% of the towns population in the last survey, enough for there to be two fairly large synagogues in the town. (as well as several more in neighboring towns) I am sure you kids will not be the token Jew in their classes.
Just a thought, have you considered adding Millburn to your short list? It fits your criteria regarding the midtown direct, and Jewish population,(last survey had the Jewish population at about 10%) not to mention top notch schools. (it also has a wonderful walkable downtown area like Summit)

Yes - we have looked in Millburn/Short Hills, but we feel like we get more for our money in Summit for our budget, which is why we wanted to consider it.
All of those areas have sizable Jewish population for sure. You do not have to worry about being the only Jewish family.
The reason Millburn is pricier is because of the schools....which are better than Summit. We love Summit, but we ended up in Millburn due to education and are thrilled with our decision. I cannot say enough good things about the schools.
However--since education is a big thing in the Jewish community, that does attract a larger percent of Jewish folks. If you do look at Millburn, the Short Hills neighborhood in particular has a nice sized Jewish population and there are several great Temples in the area.

Yes, I agree. I'm just wondering if we should even consider Summit or not. I can't seem to get a feel as to what the religious make up is. In Short Hills, a friend of mine said that at least 5 or 6 kids out of each class (not grade) are Jewish. Is it the same in Summit? Or a lot less?
Why don't you attend the Jewish Temple in Summit on a Saturday to get a feel for the local Jewish community/population? Could give you a pretty good read.
I talked to a women right on her street a fancy street in summit one day last year when I was driving around about this topic. She was jewish and moved to Summit. She told me there we not alot of Jewish families in Summit. I was suprised by this. However she said nope there are not that many. She then told me due to this if she could do it all over again she would go to Montclair.
Rockland County, NY is 30% Jewish I heard.
NJ as a whole is 5%
