My friend kept a blog for a while (not anymore, but there are quite a few posts and lots of photos that really show what it's like living here) Maybe it would be helpful. Though it's about Westfield, the towns I mentioned previously are very similar in flavor.

Westfield Clio
Thank you for taking the time to link all of these for me. Greatly appreciated.

I too am relocating .. just from one town to another commute is tough managed to sell our property in Southern Jersey looking in Monmouth , Middlesex and Union Counties ..thinking a rental for 6 months to a year checked out equity apartments The Highlands in South Plainfield seem nice close to shopping food etc . real close to hubby's job and about a 15 minute or so commute to my job ... no parkway tolls no spending tons of money on gas for the car .. gas prices here in NJ are about $3.80a gallon and if you move to a place that you need to use toll roads ie Garden State Pkwy , NJ Turnpike it can be very expensive . Prior posts are good Cranford Westfield , Clark , Fanwood , South Plainfield edison are all good locations you should get in touch with a realtor here to help you figure things out . Any one know anything about The Highlands In South Plainfield apartments ? thx

This apartment complex is extremely close to Rt. 287 and gets very mixed reviews:

Highlands at South Plainfield Apartment Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other South Plainfield apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com

Please read them all before you make a decision. Besides the pollution and noise from 287 they are overpriced for the area. I would suggest you look for apartments in Westfield, Cranford, Edison, Clark or Woodbridge.
