My husband may have a new job opportunity in Livingston. He's willing to commute up to an hour to work. I have two small kids, and one has autism. So schools are important (esp special ed in public school). I read that there's an elementary school in Basking Ridge that would be great for him, problem is we can only afford rent between $1600-$2000 month. We realize that this probably means a small 2 bdrm condo, but would love to find a small house with a backyard for them to play in. Any suggestions on towns I should look into that are safe, good schools, but more affordable? Seems like a lot of areas in north Jersey are very expensive.

There is a community called Montville Chase in Montville which is a 20-25 min. ride from Livingston and while it is a condo complex, they do have rentals. Montville also has good schools.

I had heard that New Beginnings in Fairfield has good programs.

I'm not sure how costs are handled from sending schools.

There aren't any apartments in Livingston. Well, there is one, but it is for 55 and over. Renting a private house or condo would probably be out of the OPs budget.

I think Livingston is too expensive for us. Also when it comes time to buy a house someday, probably couldn't afford to stay there.
