My acquaintance is going to be moving (living) to Edison, NJ. His work place is going to be Parsippany, NJ. He has heard horror stories regarding commuting this route - so he wants to know of best options. I'm not too familiar with this route at all, so any tried and tested suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I do Edison to Dover every day. Good days = 1 hour. bad days = 3 hours.
If you leave before 8am and don't come back until after 6pm you'll more than likely be at the hour mark.
287 is easier but very boring. Rt1-GSP-78-24-287 is a bit more interesting of a ride but the toll is $1.50 now and there is that much more potential to go wrong. BUT if there is a huge accident, there are ways to get off and back on further down. If you get stuck on 287, your simply stuck on 287 with almost no recourse depending where you get caught.

For all intents and purposes, the only direct route from Edison to Parsippany is via I-287. That is both the good news and the bad news.
The bad news is that he/she will be in the thick of commuter traffic in the morning, northbound, and in the thick of commuter traffic in the evening, southbound. Years ago, I was fortunate enough to have a "reverse commute" (southbound in the AM, northbound in the PM) on I-287, and I used to marvel at the slow-moving lines of cars on the other side of the road as I zipped along at or above the speed limit on my side of the road. In truth, I pity anyone who has to drive northbound in the AM and southbound in the PM on that road.
My best estimate--without knowing the exact points in either Edison or Parsippany--is that he/she should expect a minimum of 1.5 hours each way for this commute.
As to the good news, there really isn't any, except for the fact that there are currently no tolls on I-287. However, our esteemed governor's reputed plan to "toll" the interstate highways in NJ could easily change the only good news.
