My husband and I are looking to move to NJ somewhere aroung Lydhurst, Rutherford or Secaucus area. We know NJ very well since both our families live there. We will be moving from Astoria Queens so we are still looking for a short commute to midtown. Can you recommend any brokers or specific websites to search. There is no rush in our apartment search but I would like to see what's out there. We hope to be out of Astoria in the spring.
Any reason why he/she shouldn't use craigslist? I'm asking because other places have realtors listing homes for rent and for whatever reason they want to charge a WHOLE MONTH"S RENT as fees. . If you ask me, it sounds ridiculous, but that's my personal opinion. I know, a realtor will say that they put a lot of work into it, and I won't argue with that.
Any other websites to look for rentals listed by owners?
Yeah I wouldn't waste your time with Craigslist. Of the 5 apartments I've rented in my life, I've yet to find one on Craigslist.
My girlfriend and I made the same move from Astoria to NJ back in May. Those are definitely great towns to look into, especially Rutherford/East Rutherford and Lyndhurst with the train and bus options there. We looked there as well but ended up finding a place in Bogota. She commutes to Port Authority daily, express bus from right in front of our apartment gets her into the city in around a half hour or so.
I'd recommend just taking a drive around the towns and look out for "For Rent" signs. There's plenty of apartment complexes all around the area with nice sized places for good prices. Our apartment here is larger than our apt in Astoria (which was big, for NYC at least), cheaper, has outdoor space and no limit on pets (which of course led to getting another dog...).
You'll likely miss Astoria a bit (especially if you're a fan of Dillinger's brunch!) but luckily it's a reasonably short drive if the traffic is on your side.

Craigslist apt listings in north jersey have gotten overrun by agencies. You see a link for "2 Bedroom Apt (town)" and click it and it just a link to an agency advertising.
