We are thinking of moving to Colts Neck, NJ and need to know how to commute to Manhattan and how long does it take? Is this common or are we crazy to consider it?

As much detail as you can provide the better.
Thanks
Are you thinking about driving, train, bus, walking...?
BTW, no matter which way you decide on commuting...gonna be a loooong trip.

It is not uncommon at all, but there will still be those who feel you are crazy to consider it.
The trains and buses are not empty. A great number of people commute from this area to Manhattan.
I live in the Tinton Falls area. Colts Neck is ten minutes away from me. I catch my train in Little Silver, which is fewer than three miles from where I live.
You could do the same, or explore the bus options (I'm not as sure about buses.) But again, you'll hardly be the only person making that commute!
From many areas in Colts Neck you can catch the train from Aberdeen/Matawan and it'll be an hour, give or take. Many people from Colts Neck commute to the city, my parents both did it for decades. I would say a very large portion of Colts Neck residents do commute to the city, maybe not the majority, but very close.
There is no parking at Aberdeen/Matawan. Any of the NJT stops is a schelp, 139 on Route 9 could be closer depending but it's going to be really long either way.

The parking situation is MUCH better at Aberdeen/Matawan more recently, as opposed to what it had been 6-10 years ago, not even close.

I work in midtown. One of my co-workers commutes from Colts Neck. I personally would never do it, but it's not unusual.
