Hi..

My company is relocating me to New jersey in the coming weeks. Not sure where I will live yet but probably around the Newark area. Part of the process is me negotiating a new salary package.

Im just looking for some approximate figures of living costs. Here are some essential points..

22, single, male.. Looking to rent a single room in a shared apartment which has internet, TV and all the perks. Looking for something quite modern and new.
Also looking to buy a car and pay monthly with finance (I will probably be driving to and from work not more than 45 Min each way). Then I would have insurance and petrol (gas). Groceries would be average price for me. Other expenses would be normal going out money and clothes e.t.c

Any idea how much a month approx I would need.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Joe

Depending on where you are in Newark, you many not need to drive to work (though you'll still probably need it for other things) Look into Hoboken and Jersey City, though they may be expensive. Also, be careful about what neighborhood you look at if it's Jersey City. I'm the same age and away at school in Newark, so I kinda know the area since I've been here a few years. Most people I know who want to live an urban type lifestyle are looking at Jersey City, Hoboken, Brooklyn (which I wouldn't recommend because of the commute to NJ) and Newark.

Thanks for reply..

I have looked at some apartments in those areas, but I cant really commit to anywhere until I can work out a budget..
In terms of getting to work, if there was a good train system around North NJ then that would be great but ive looked at the map and it seems the train doesn't really have that many destinations. Thats why I considered the car to work.

Hoboken seems to be a nice area to live..
