How are those areas near route 22?

It seems pretty quite to me from looking around, but I could be wrong.

I grew up in Basking Ridge -- above the hill which below it lies these areas.

These areas specified are definitely more affordable than most of Morris and Somerset Counties. North Plainfield and Green Brook are more blue collar but definitely safe, quiet, and close to stuff to do.

I'd also put Union twp, Bound Brook, Middlesex, and Scotch Plains in this category to a certain extent. I'd give Scotch Plains a special gold star because it's been rated one of the most affordable places in NJ with good schools and decent transit to NYC.

Hillside was always a rough area. Not sure if it's been cleaned up since. Probably want to avoid if you are white.

Thank you for the info. I will put those on the list of places to investigate
