Does West Windsor allow Solar Panels to be installed in the backyard? One of my friends is contemplating bidding on a house there for around 525K. The yard size is good. The only problem is the deafening noise that the NJ Transit trains make there 24 by 7. He was thinking of putting
a tall wall of solar-panels there, to prevent the noise as well as generate some power. Does the West-Windsor township allow this construction? Any homeowner's experience in this direction? Also, because of the compromised-location like this, how much %-discount in the price should
be there? Appreciate any constructive feedback in advance.

Apparently, the township does allow this with the appropriate permits.

The problem you may have is with the structure required to support the PV (photvoltaic) panels as to be an effective sound barrier it will no doubt exceed the Townships maximum allowable fence height of 6 to 7 feet (not sure what the exact ht limitation is) - also, the PV panels need the proper orientation and incline to benefit from exposure to the sun so, hopefully, the property line you plan to position this barrier provdes for the right orientation and you have sufficient yard space to accomodate the incline of the structure. Also, PV panels are not very attractive so make sure you do not mind looking at these once installed should they be in plain sight from the house.

Living in such close proximity to the train station is considered disireable (walking distance) and generally commands a premium price.

jerseyj: thanks for the informative reply. Actually, only the tracks are near, not the station. Hence, it should be discounted, no? Also, he is thinking of using those dynamically-adjustable panels that lie-low during the day tracking Sun all day, and in the night raise-themselves up to stand-tall, thereby creating a sound-proof tall-wall. With their dark-color facing outwards on the fence and in the dark, the township may not mind. And at the sun-rise, they will crawl back to their low-lying day-position, so as not be an eyesore to the morning commuters. But, if there is another home available in that price-range, he won't have to deal with all these headaches, isn't it?

The draw to West Windsor is access to the station and the schools. These two factors sustain the price of housing.

Houses that are within walking distance to the station are very desireable as parking at the station is limited. The trade off is the train noise.

I am not familiar with the dynamically-adjustable solar panels of which you speak but they sound labour intensive and costly.

Your friends should be able to find a house a mile or 2 away from the tracks in their price range.

Most people in the township hear the train, differing sound attenuation, but over time, get used to it.

jerseyj: How can one get used to the shrill noise of the train-whitsle in the middle of the night? ... say, you are in a quite dream-land past midnight and here comes the NJTransit train, suddenly gives out the loud, shrill whistle and wakes you up, to bring you to the reality of being close to the train tracks!! Do the West Windsorites have to take a lot of sleep medication or sleep with cotton-balls in their ears?

I am going to see if anyone comments, but as far as I notice the noise from the trains is more the clanking and the motors. Yes there is an occasional whistle but it's not in the midle of the nite that I have ever noticed. I am not too close, and barely hear anything (about 3 miles or so) but I know when I have been at the train station either to take the train or to pick someone up, there is rarely a whistle. (days of petticoat junction are long gone
