Oh I don't mind a roommate, but why need? Is it unsafe?

Your budget is $500-$800 rent, and it's very hard to get that kind of rent around here unless you rent a room.

You would need a roommate because--unfortunately--the only thing that you could rent in the NY Metro area for $500-800 per month is a walk-in closet.
I suspect that you are coming from another area of the country where rents are much lower than in this area.
It is much more realistic to think in terms of $1,000-1,200 per month for a decent apartment in a decent area of NJ or the outer boroughs of NYC.

Woodbridge is not a bad idea, but Staten Island will be tough with no car. Not sure public transportation from SI to Edison would be available.
