Friends, we have settled down on either Summit or Metuchen to buy our own place, due to NYC transport accessibility, neighborhood and school systems. My wife will be commuting to NYC daily, and I am not sure how NJ Transit commutes are from these towns during peak hours. She would prefer to leave by 8:15AM daily. Will it possible to obtain a seat in the train during the ride from either of these locations, or will it be too crowded that she may have to travel standing. In general how late would be it be ideal to start daily and not stand all the way during commute.

Thanks in advance.

I can't vouch for that particular line, but in my experience on the Bergen/Main, Boonton, and NJCL trains over the past 30 years, it's unusual to have to stand on NJ Transit trains. Hopefully someone else can give you better information for the line that serves those towns.

8:15 is kind of a late end to the rush hour, so I think that would make standing even less likely. Most regular commuters are traveling to the city earlier.

I think it depends on the day. Generally the trains are packed. When I lived in Maplewood I could still get a seat on any of the 8 in the morning trains. Maplewood is 1 to 2 stops after Summit.

I have frequently traveled from Summit on the midtown direct train between 7 and 8 am and only have run into crowding a few times during and in anticipation of bad snow storms. (maybe once or twice a year, and since the men on the line are chivalrous, I have never had to stand. ) You should be fine.

Metuchen - yes, you will find a seat. The trains have enough coaches to accomodate the rush; and you'll be one stop ahead of Metropark, which is usually the most crowded.
