I'm purchasing a house in northern NJ and just had the water test done. All results were good except for a concerning amount of lead. The report came back with 15.5 and noted the acceptable level would be below 5.

My question is...what can be done about lead in the water? Is this a simple fix (filtration in the house) or am I looking at costly solutions that might make a person change their mind about purchasing a particular house?

15ppb is the EPA standard, A good filter can remove most of it, (for not much $'s).

Lead in 'normal' in older home, from the Lead solder used to join the pipes.

A filter at point of use where you drink might work well. They cost 150 bucks and I would suggest testing post-filter and see how you do.

I am not an expert, or don't want to be a deal breaker, but if you have children in fact any one, I would be really be concerned about the long term medical effects, the lead may have. Or if you really love the house, you can get the best water filter system, but "don't drink the water from it. " And get a bottled water cooler system. You know the one with the big jug on top of it. Good Luck !
