Ive been town searching in bergen county NJ for awhile now and trying to narrow down some towns.
Down to Maywood, Teaneck, Hackensack...I need good schools, 300k budget and I will be commuting to NYC by car everyday.
Safety is also #1 priority because of the small kids I do have. I dont mind living in a diverse neighborhood either (coming from East Harlem NYC and Lower East Side NYC so I am used to it) who can help? Any info on these towns would be greatly appreciated! and any other towns in Bergen county that would fit my criteria.

Hackensack's schools aren't the greatest and I believe Maywood students got to Hackensack for high school. Other towns right around there worth looking at: Ridgefield Park, Ridgefield, Bogota, Little Ferry, Moonachie

If you check out listings on Trulia, they give you estimates for the properties. Bogota tends to have higher tax because it's a very small town and the only shared municipal service is the court with Little Ferry. It will also depend on the value of the home though.

You might also want to check out Paramus and Fair Lawn. Lower taxes in those towns, especially Paramus due to all the malls and commercial tax money coming in. East Rutherford has significantly lower taxes by Bergen County standards thanks to the sports complex.

Take a look at Riveredge or Dumont. Better schools than Hackensack or Teaneck.

Default Hackensack is a very diversed town!

Hi, I used to live in Hackensack for ten years. I live by Hudson Street almost like in the south of it and my brother lives in the central part closer to Hackensack University Hospital.

I would honestly say that no town has no crime or "mischief" people but in my ten years of living in my place, the neighbors are friendly. People there are Italians, Hispanics, Chinese. Filipinos , Africans, Koreans etc..

It's a good place to live because it's in the center of Bergen and you could go quickly to shopping places, churches, parks as long as you have your car and there are lots of buses to New York and other towns as well.

I think out of all of the cities, Teaneck is the nicest.

I've lived in Hackensack over 20 years and I am itching to get out. Thank goodness I finally am moving to Nutley.

Everytime I move somewhere else and back to Hackensack, the city gets worse & worse. It's a little ghetto too.

Paramus is nice also. The part not located by the malls.

Have you looked into any Northwestern cities in Bergen County?

Teaneck taxes are higher than Maywood and Hackensack. Maywood is a much nicer town than Hackensack with better schools for K-8 but as the other poster mentions Maywood kids go to Hackensack HS. You will get more house for your money in Hackensack than the other towns you mentioned.
