We are relocating to NJ with 3 kids (ages 5, 3, and 17 months) and need to live close to Florham Park. We are looking to rent a house (wow... Why do all the houses have HUGE backyards?) or townhome near Florham Park but want to live near a great elemantry school (my daughter starts kindergarten this coming year), family friendly, near library, parks, safe walking/ running trails and close to grocery store. Our budget for housing is about 3,000. Any recommendations??? Please help. Greatly appreciate any input. Thank you!!!!

First on your list should be Chatham (both the borough and the Twp) and Madison. Very safe area, great schools, (some of the best in the state/country) nice walkable downtowns with shopping, dining, entertainment, plus an easy commute to Florham Park. The houses in downtown areas of Chatham Borough and Madison you will find smaller lots - remember this area is suburban, not urban...we like our open spaces and trees!
This thread on C/D will give you some more great info on Madison //www.city-data.com/forum/new-j...-me-about.html Actually I recommend doing a quick search on C/D for both Chatham and Madison, there is a huge wealth of info to be found on here.
Madison a quaint town with lovely boutique-type stores and unique restaurants (e.g. The Garlic Rose). It is a college town which can have it's up side and down side with a quite a few college pubs and hangouts which can be quite active in the evening hours. Other towns to consider which are a little further away but still in proximity to Florham Park are Livingston and East Hanover which both offer excellent school systems too but no real town centers but large enough to offer many different shopping areas of every type criss-crossing the township. Denville is a little further north in Morris County but also has a nice town center and quite a few lake communities (with beaches) which are great for the children in summer months. Chatham is a bucolic town next to Madison but can be a bit pricy in the township on rentals since there are mostly larger period colonials. All-in-all you can run from one town to the other in the area and not realize which township you are actually in because it is still considered the metropolitan area. Chatham runs in to Summit (Union County) which is also a very cultural town. In the other direction as you head up Route 24 towards Morristown you will enter Convent Station (part of Morris Township) and eventually arrive at the The Green in Morristown. Morris Township circles around the town of Morristown and has some good neighborhoods too out the otherside to the lovely Washington Valley/Brookside area. Here you will find Patriots Path which is over a 15 mile hiking/biking/rollerblading path weaving through some of the most beautiful countryside you will see in northwestern New Jersey. My favorite town is Morristown because it reminds me of my English heritage. It is becoming inceasingly popular again and although the schools are reasonable, many Morristownians do send their children to some of the top-rated private schools in the area. All in all, it's a preference you can decide after completing a tour of that part of Morris County. Florham Park is centrally located and quickly attainable by major artery routes like Columbia Turnpike and Routes 24,10 and 287 although the 287 and route 80 intersections can be a nighmare at rush hour. If you need rental alerts they can be provided to you on a complimentary basis. Feel free to inquire.

Florham Park is a great community already so you can start looking there. Surrounding towns ranked as follows:
1) Madison - great family town, great downtown, train station, great schools.
2) Chatham - also great town, downtown is small, train station, great schools.
3) Morristown - great downtown, has train station, schools are ok.
4) Summit - is another great town, snooty, train station, downtown, great schools, super expensive.
With your budget, I think Madison, Chatham and Summit might be out of your price range. Two condos in my building in Morristown are rented at $5,800 per month.
Thank you so much for your input. Realtor is recommending some rentals too in Livingston and east Hanover. What can you guys tell me about these two towns? She has mention some of the other towns you guys have recommended too.
