We may pay the most in taxes and insurance, but at least we live the longest.

Women in NJ live nearly 1 year longer than the national average.
Men in NJ live nearly 2 years longer than the national average.
Here is a couple of articles:

That's because they (local govt's) won't let us die. They need us to continue paying the highest taxes in the nation.

In NJ we are better educated, have better diets and do more exercising than the slobs in the Midwest and South. You ever see the tourists in Times Square? Their jumbo jets from Omaha must hold only about a dozen of them.

What EB Wick says is true.

While it sometimes seems that we have a lot of obese people in NJ, the actual percentage of morbidly obese people in our state is FAR lower than what you would find in the Deep South and in the Midwest. And, since obesity is probably the biggest avoidable factor relating to things like Type II Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Sleep Apnea, and a host of other medical conditions, it just stands to reason that an area with fewer morbidly obese people will reflect more favorable longevity statistics.

LOL , never get onto an Elevator with a group of southern tourists....the reason for that is they tax foods down there at a higher rate , forcing most of the population to eat the crap and subsidized foods.

We are very lucky that there is no sales tax on supermarket food in NJ, with the exception of "take out" meals. So, perhaps we are not the most heavily taxed people in the nation if folks in those red states have to pay sales tax on everything that they eat.

But...as to eating "crap"...I thought that this was part of the Southern culture. You know--coat everything with bread crumbs and then deep fat fry it, and cook your vegetables with fat back in order to take something that was originally a healthy meal, and turning it into an obesity-producing meal high in saturated fat.

Additionally, there are multiple studies indicating that the incidence of smoking decreases as the level of education increases. Since NJ tends to have a more highly-educated population, we probably have a lower percentage of smokers in our state. That factor, coupled with fewer morbidly obese people would have a major impact on health statistics.

I thought it would easily be Hawaii - wouldn't have guessed NJ was WAY up there (but I've never been there). I might have guessed NJ to be too polluted for life expectancy to be way up there.
