Ignition interlocks. Make them mandatory after first DUI.
Technology is improving in this area and possible all cars will have a non-obtrusive means of determining if someone is intoxicated while driving in the future.
As Goat pointed out, that wouldn't have helped in this situation. He hasn't been convicted yet.

i don't know how expensive it would be to implement, and judging by the red light camera thread people would never go for it, but with all the "safety features" imposed on auto manufacturers by the government, how in the name of god is there not one that prevents driving while legally drunk? people can make every big brother argument they want, but seatbelts, traction control, abs, etc., are all required now....how could those be justified by not a device that prevents drunk driving, unless the cost is too high to implement.
p.s. let's remember that driving is a privilage, not a right.
I guess you could make DUI a 'hate crime' and give more options to the judges.
Really, I know of a guy who was picked up twice in one day for DUI.
what do we do with these people?
I don't want them in jail as I have to pay for it.
I don't want them on the road in their sober moments between binders.
Lot of these guys are chronic abusers and nothing short of tieing them to a tree will stop them.
The existing laws do not deal with chronic abusers. they are intended to deal with the one off kind of guy who has an oops and drank too much at the party. The law assumes rational thinking is in play.
Chronic drunks are a different game and need different and creative rules.
Any required rehab should be paid for by the drunk in lieu of paying a fine to the court.
Suspending a drivers license never stopped anybody from driving.( how can you pay the fine if you can't get to work?)
You have to hit people where it hurts, in the pocket book.
$1,000 first time offense and double it every time after.
If you can't pay the fine you go to jail until somebody pays the fine or until you work off the fine.
As someone who has gotten two DUI's, I can tell you that is not true. I got fined heavily and kept doing it and doing it. I even spent time in jail and that did not stop me. For the record, my last DUI was in 2006, I no longer drink and drive, and haven't for years. If I go out, I take the bus. Problem solved.

You have the right idea. The only way to stop a drunk driver is to make so they cannot drive the car intoxicated. I have heard that in the near future it will be mandatory for all cars to have built in sensors in the steering wheel that can instantly read your BAC. If your too intoxicated, the car will not start. I am personally in favor of it. That will almost eliminate the number of drunk drivers on the road. The only reason being is of course the older cars will not have it.

Do you really want to have to blow into a breathalyzer every time you go to drive your car?

I am only in favor of it if it will be unobtrusive. I definitely would not approve of having breathalyzer interlocks become mandatory for everyone. The steering wheel sensors is really the best idea. Through a search, I found they already have them in Canada.
Plus with the breathalyzer things, you simply need someone sober to blow into it for you and away you go.
I recall a sad story of a father who picked up his young daughters for scheduled visitation. They disappeared, car and all. Finally found them at the bottom of a river. Father had been drunk and must have gotten one of the kids to blow into the thing for him.

They are not perfect but they will cut back on this happening by a significant percentage. As someone else pointed out the steering wheel sensor things are the way to go.
