I'm considering disconnecting that function on my wife's car. Sorry, nanny staters, but I decide whether to wear the belt or not, and having a bunch of uniformed thugs punish me for not doing it won't change that.

They reading the manual. There's an override. Don't use it. We just have to look a bit harder to find the body after the mva.NJ is also one of the states that will reduce awards based on non seatbelt use.

I understand the idea behind the program, but the new commercials they are running where "cops are trained to see when you are FAKING wearing your seatbelt!" are just annoying to my intelligence.

For the most part, if you are not wearing your seatbelt, and you see a cop, wouldn't you just... put it on? YOu forgot. Put it on, you're done.

But these commercials are saying that people are taking the effort to FAKE wearing a seat belt - where it takes 1 more second of effort to engage it... and cops are trained to see this EVEN AT NIGHT.

Really?

For example, one shot shows a kid approaching a checkpoint. He has plenty of time to put on the belt but he fakes it. Why?
ever think that it's the time of the year that more people hit the roads, and they are trying to increase awareness for public safety?

Nah....that's way to normal to think that way.

more highway fatalities means higher car insurance costs, and more emergency services costs. and we all get to pay those costs. yes, i like Darwinism too, but I don't like to have to pay for it. Public Safety campaigns are a good thing, even though they cost money. Spend upfront to save down the road.

would you be willing to pay higher insurance rates, and admit to them you do not wear your seatbelt, so I don't have to subsidize your risk?

Have things changed? I thought selt belt violations were a secondary offense, meaning a cop can't pull you over for just a seat belt infraction?

It goes in a straight line after exiting the windshield, shouldn't be too hard. Or you can follow the blood trail.

That changed years ago.

The ecm and the condition of the belt will tell if it was connected during a crash. Not wearing it during a air bag deployment even at a relatively low speed can cause a serious injury.

The bottom line is that their work. Wear them. Don't wear them. But you might find out how little in the way of medical coverage you have on your auto policy. Especially if you sustain an injury that requires long term care.

Never had a fatality of an occupant wearing a seat belt.

That's between me and my insurance company. Being a customer of the same insurance company doesn't give you the right to control my actions.
