I currently live in Newark on University near Broad Street Station, and while Newark is not the safest city on earth, it is not as bad as people make it out to be, and depends 100% on what neighborhood you're in. Downtown is okay, depending on where you're at, Ironbound is okay, Forest Hills is really nice, University Hieghts where I live is okay, and there's a few other neighborhoods that aren't too bad that I'm forgetting. Between me and my friends only one of us have ever been "mugged" and that scenario was more stupidity than anything else really. As a part time Newark resident (I spend about 8 months out of the year here) who is friends with many full time Newark residents, I am sick of hearing people talk about how you need to avoid this city. That doesn't do anyone any good. Avoid certain neighborhoods, but don't avoid the city as a whole.
Anyway, the apartments that the OP was talking about are perfectly safe and fine, although there is a chance her car could get vandalized and the management of the building is REALLY crappy. I would highly recommend bringing a car, because the bus can sometimes be confusing and frightening and I would also like to suggest the Mount Prospect Towers. I would also like to add avoid the Colonnade's sister the Pavillion. I don't know why people are so afraid of this neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the building itself is safe. I drive around with my windows open and doors unlocked and walk to mass at St. Lucy's every week (unless it's cold, then I drive)
short answer: no
long answer: HELL nooooooooooo!!!!
having worked in newark i can tell you its not advisable
People who work in newark don't live in newark... How does it make you an expert on the city... just like commuting to Manhattan doesn't you a new yorker or an expert on bed stuy

LOL, nothing like picking up the argument 2 years later!
lol love how she added in that she's pretty and young. So I guess if you were old and unattractive walking on the streets of Newark at night would make you less of a target..
I would not recommend Newark. Sure, it's cheap, but it's for a reason. If you want to be in an urban area close to NYC, I would recommend Union City or West New York. Way safer than Newark and you'll fit right in with all the gorgeous Latin women walking around. Lol
Opps, nevermind. Just realized this was posted 4 years ago. Haha. I wonder what happened to the OP. Did she move? Did she maintain her looks?
