I want a single family home with a fenced yard (for my dogs) in a fun area of NJ. I will be working in Chatham and do not want more than a 30 minute commute. I am moving from Chicago and like walkable neighborhoods with bars and restaurants. Not worried too much at this time about schools. My budget would be up to $400K...maybe more for the right place.

So, where should I be looking? I don't even know where to start...

Try:

Morristown
Montclair
South Orange
Maplewood

In these areas you should be able to find a home with a $400k budget, but keep in mind it will likely be a smaller, older home on a small lot.

You're not going to find a lot of single people in Maplewood/South Orange. It's all about the kids. I'd focus on Morristown.
